Before I take off on my blog vacation I thought I should share a few observations. There are some shady items out there to watch out for. I think you will agree that these might be important.
1) Water Rate and Utility Tax Increases: You will hear a whole lot of things from City Hall about their requests that you pay more for what you have always gotten. Most of what they say will not be true. The reason for the Utility Tax increase is City Hall wants to become a kind of little Los Angeles. They want to pay their employees higher salaries, benefits and retirement. And it is expected that you will happily kick in for this. From now until forever. The world will not end if the UUT extension do-over planned for April of 2014 is shot down.
The Water Rate Increase has everything to do with $16 million dollars in bond and other debt. It doesn't have all that much to do with pipes. You are being asked to make good on some festering old debt that the City is having trouble dealing with right now. Your additional money will not make many of our water infrastructure problems go away. You'll just be paying for some of the terrible and irresponsible financial mistakes this City made back in 1998 and 2003.
2) Green Development is an oxymoron. Nothing is improved ecologically by packing in a bunch of generic infill redevelopment into our downtown. Or anywhere else in Sierra Madre for that matter. This is about nothing more than crass old school style development painted a nice new color. You are being told it is "green" because certain people do not respect your analytic abilities very much. In plain English, they think you are stupid and can be easily swayed by bogus save the world appeals to your emotions.
3) Jargon. If you hear a government elected official using terminology like "process," "best practices," "sustainable," "green practices," "framework," "scoping," "stakeholder," or "methodology," he or she is most likely trying to blow smoke up your posterior. Always be sure to ask jargon speakers what they mean by these words. Chances are pretty good they don't know themselves, and are just reading them off of something prepared for them by someone else. It's a part of the process.
Thanks to all who have helped out here. I am now officially on blog vacation. I have no idea how long it will last. I could be back in a week, or perhaps more than that. Like I said, I have some things I need to deal with. But I will see you around. And if you are looking for something to read, there are 1,354 posts and 75,709 comments here. That should be enough for now.

It's too early to be an April fool's joke. JC, please say it aint so.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! You've been hitting the keys with unprecedented effort and results and we're grateful. I don't know what I'll do with my early morning keyboard time... maybe start my own blog. Anyone looking for antique stroganoff recipes? Any controversy there? Just don't forget to come back in a week, or more than that.
ReplyDeleteNow what am I going to do with my mornings?
ReplyDeleteI hope you can take care of things that are bogging you down. Best of luck Moderator!
The Tattler is an important connection for Sierra Madre. Where are we going to get the latest news? Please say this is temporary. Can you get someone to fill in temporarily?
ReplyDeleteCan TB temporarily fill in?
DeleteJerry Hubbard was no Barth Gimble.
DeleteThanks John for all of the great writing, and for keeping us so well informed. We'll miss the Tattler, but hope you have a great time away from it.
ReplyDeleteI hope you come back before the PUSD implodes!
ReplyDeletePUSD is very close to swallowing itself up. I'd like to sit by and watch.
DeleteSo no local news for a while - I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteMod, Are you going on hiatus because of the Wistaria Festival?
ReplyDeleteYes. Apparently the World's Largest Flowering Plant is very angry this year. We are being blamed for the lack of rain. I am afraid something bad is going to happen.
DeleteCan't wait
DeleteRight here, right now, unequivocably! There is only one John Crawford!! High standards, great writing, and humanity. A week or perhaps more of time to recharge and attend to matters of daily living is a small price to pay for the time he spends in pursuit of the truth on our behalf.
ReplyDeleteThanks Crawford. Now maybe I'll be able to get some work done!
ReplyDeleteProductivity across Corporate America is expected to climb in the Tattler's absence.
DeleteCan you set some sort of early warning system when you'll be back online?
ReplyDeleteNoooooooooo!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou need a break....two jobs is a tough ride. The fraud will continue and nothing will change while your away.It will all be here, higher and deeper when you return!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, folks, if we don't have the Tattler we won't have any access to the important issues facing us here in Sierra Madre (as in our slice of PUSD). That would be a tremendous loss.
ReplyDeleteYes, I personally have found great benefit in keeping up what escapades the PUSD has been up to. Tony B., can you keep us abreast of that beast?
DeleteI'm waiting to hear where the TT money went...
DeleteThe petition for our vote? The middle school campus?
DeleteI am concerned that those crooks will take advantage of our limited media communication.
People need to stand up. Sometimes i thought the blog took too much attention. Nobody goes to city council meetings anymore. It is time for a change. The Tattler was good, but it was never enough.
DeleteYes, Daily reader, I feel your pain.
DeleteToo bad there isn't a way to generate a revenue stream so that there's some staff to take the load off and carry the Tattler through your necessary timeouts.
ReplyDeleteA volunteer grant researcher/funding expert? The Tattler might have to go 501(c)3 but that would limit its public positions. Although Bill Moyers seems to have figured out exactly how far he can go inside of the PBS regime. Maybe that's an idea - blog support from public TV sources.
10:03, maybe rather than getting funding that might stifle, maybe gathering a few loyal volunteers who could maybe moderate comments? Get a few talented writers like Brandenburg?
DeleteThere's no way the SM Patch could cover anything beyond the library hours. This is the place to go for real local issues and information.
John , who's going to cover the city council meetings? Can you get someone?
DeleteYes John, how about a few local guest writers and leave a day for you to cover City Council?
DeleteThis is a good thing my friends, but all good things must come to an end.
DeleteMedicine is a good thing too 1:36
DeleteAnd 1:04 pm, where would one "gather a few loyal volunteers who could maybe moderate comments? Get a few talented writers like Brandenburg?" Perhaps the Community garden behind City Hall? During which season would these volunteers and talented writers be ripening? Why haven't they stepped forward on their own? Many followers send commentary and items to the Tattler's e-mail address. And its been said some great stuff shows up. Let's step up the pace!
DeleteAnd 5:42, who would be going through the commentaries sent to the Tattlers email? A vine ripened tomato?
DeleteWaiting for your return! One can be sure that the City's partisans will continue to press their campaign to seize a larger portion from our wallets through fraudulent claims of pending disaster if we don't ante up.The fact that this so called problem was created and encouraged by the current development crowd,is not our citizens concern.Don't expect Joe Citizen to bail the Development Alliance out of it's hole!
ReplyDeleteJohn, don't know what I'll do without my morning coffee and the Tattler.
ReplyDeleteOh you can still have the coffee...
DeleteHeaven forbid I start reading the Patch!
DeleteYou can't go. There are now three sets of house poles at One Carter. Each has a giant house built to the curb and to the back lot line. Who wants to live like that? Could the City possibly allow that? How could the developer build such small lots for a supposed luxury community?
ReplyDeleteWho wants to live in houses like that?
ReplyDeletePeople who can buy the land and legally build them.
They would look at my small old house as a peasant's hut.
The only thing you can do 12:56 is show up at Planning Commission meetings and beg for mercy.
I for one would like to know what everyone's doing for saint Patrick's day? Also, what does everyone have againt anything green for that matter?
ReplyDeleteHey Steve, what have you been ingesting?
DeleteWishing you and your family a long deserved break. Thank you for all your great writing and information.
ReplyDeleteJohn, take a week, take two or three but please promise to come back. And I'll promise to check back. Thank you for a great read.
ReplyDeleteWe are a community of friends who show up here to fight the good fight and reject the greedsters money grab for our small town. That is what the Tattler is: a place to learn and share and care and take action.
ReplyDeleteAmen, 6:07.
DeleteJohn you deserve an award....thank you for all you have done.
ReplyDeleteMay other writers be inspired with your truth and dignity.
Mostly, your writing has been growing.
Time to pen a book?
The houses, condo's or apartments are being shoe horned on to postage size lots and it's become a PHD development.
ReplyDeletePILE it HIGHER and DEEPER, sky's the limit.
Take as much time as you need....relax and enjoy life and family. Thanks for all you have done.
ReplyDeleteBye John,
ReplyDeleteYour witty commentary will be sorely missed but you've inspired me to get out and find the truth and not accept the 'status quo' around town. Please come back after your long deserved rest and help us keep them honest!
A Devoted Tattler Fan
Just when I have good stuff!! I hear that Carnow is getting a lot of $$$$$$ to leave quietly cause he found "inappropriate" images on Gundry's computer. Heard it from 2 different sources. One was a union rep.
ReplyDeleteHush!
DeleteWhy hush? Are you either of them?
